Cobra Dukes are one of the many bands around at the moment who are serialising the 80’s but, at least, they have something of their own and something new in the way in which they have orchestrated the sound. The entrancing vocals and simple addictive beats draw the crowd in and give an expectant air from the upturned faces.
Lead singer Kyle has a style that is reminiscent of David Bowie and he manages to pull it off without the usual arrogance of similar bands. The band as a whole have developed into a very smart rendition of people like The Cure and early Stooges and have captured an essence of the bored and melancholic foreboding of New Romantics like Joy Division.
They are refreshing in that they are not trying to be exactly like their influences but are taking the sounds and the overall emotions of those bands and re-enforcing them with simple hooks and songs that would do very well if given the chance to take a larger stage.
The night was an impressive performance with them playing songs from their first album such as ‘Golden Bird’ and ‘Leave the Light On’ as well as new pieces. The new stuff was not as tight as their more established and pieces but you can see where those songs will be with time – tight and well-formed.
In all Cobra Dukes are a band to watch.
